Field Joint Coating Sleeve

Field Joint Coating Sleeve

A Field Joint Coating Sleeve is a wraparound heat-shrinkable system engineered to protect girth weld joints on steel pipelines from corrosion and mechanical stress.

Field Joint Coating Sleeve | Technical Product Specification

A Field Joint Coating Sleeve is a wraparound heat-shrinkable system engineered to protect girth weld joints on steel pipelines from corrosion and mechanical stress. Constructed from a cross-linked radiation-modified high-density polyethylene (HDPE) backing coated with a specialized mastic or hot-melt sealant, the sleeve shrinks tightly upon torch or induction heating, forming a permanent, moisture-impermeable bond with 3LPE, 3LPP, FBE, and coal tar enamel mainline coatings.

Key Features

High Peel Strength: Delivers strong adhesive bonding to steel substrates and mainline bevels, preventing moisture ingress and under-film corrosion.

Shear and Stress Resistance: Withstands soil stress, thermal expansion, and backfilling impact loads without mechanical failure.

Cathodic Disbondment Resistance: Tested to perform under strict cathodic protection voltage ranges, minimizing cathodic disbondment areas.

Fast Installation: Uniform circumferential shrinkage reduces installation time per joint on active spread lines.

Factory-Controlled Closure Patch: Utilizes a fiber-reinforced closure patch designed to maintain mechanical integrity during shrinking.

Quality Control & Manufacturing Standards

[Visual Anchor: Insert real factory photo showing electronic beam radiation facility, online laser thickness gauge monitor, or in-house destructive peel test laboratory]

Raw Material Testing: Melt flow index (MFI), density, and carbon black dispersion checks on every polymer batch prior to compounding.

Extrusion Monitoring: Continuous laser gauge measurement during sheet extrusion to maintain strict thickness tolerances (+/- 0.1 mm).

Radiation Cross-Linking: Controlled electron beam irradiation processing to ensure consistent tensile strength and recovery memory.

Adhesive Peel Testing: In-house destructive bond testing performed per production lot to verify adhesion levels on abrasive-blasted steel panels.

Compliance: Manufactured in accordance with ISO 21809-3, EN 12068, and AWWA C216 standards. Mill Test Certificates (MTC) supplied with every shipment.

Packaging & Shipping

Packaging Details: Sleeves are interleaved with release film, bundled in moisture-resistant PE bags, and packed in reinforced export-grade corrugated cartons or fumigation-free wooden crates.

Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight; recommended storage temperature below 40°C.

Shelf Life: 24 months from the date of manufacture under proper storage conditions.

Shipping Ports: FOB/CIF via major ports (Qingdao, Shanghai, Tianjin) with container load optimization for LCL/FCL shipments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the required steel surface preparation before installing the sleeve?

A: The steel surface must be abrasive blast cleaned to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 with a surface profile (anchor pattern) of 50 - 100 um. Pre-heating the pipe to the specified temperature (typically 60°C to 80°C) is required immediately prior to sleeve application.

Q: Are these sleeves compatible with standard 3LPE mainline coatings?

A: Yes. The adhesive formulations are chemically engineered to bond with factory-applied 3LPE, 3LPP, and FBE bevels, provided the mainline coating edge is properly tapered and cleaned.

Q: What equipment is needed for on-site installation?

A: Standard installation requires an abrasive blasting unit, propane or butane heating torches (or induction heating equipment), a roller for pressing the closure patch and sleeve edges, and a surface temperature thermometer.

Q: Do you provide liquid epoxy primer with the sleeve kits?

A: Yes. For 3-layer coating systems, two-component solvent-free liquid epoxy primer is supplied as part of the complete joint coating kit, packaged in matching proportional sets.

Q: What is your standard lead time for bulk project orders?

A: Standard production lead time ranges from 15 to 25 days, depending on order volume and custom dimension requirements. Partial shipments can be arranged for urgent spread construction schedules.

Q: How do you ensure lot traceability for quality audits?

A: Each carton is labeled with a unique batch number, manufacturing date, and specification code linking directly to our electronic QA/QC production records and raw material testing logs.
