Our company provides the following products

Reference Electrodes

Reference electrodes are used to measure the polarization potential of cathodic protected structures. They shall be kept in contact with the same electrolyte (soil or water) surrounding the structures, and the voltage that rises between the structure and the lead cable of the electrode, measured with a high-impedance voltmeter, gives an indication of the effectiveness of cathodic protection.

Types of Reference Electrodes

01

Aqueous Reference Electrodes

Aqueous reference electrodes are commonly used in aqueous solutions and are relatively inexpensive. They are made of a silver or silver chloride wire coated with a layer of silver chloride and immersed in an electrolyte solution. The most common aqueous reference electrodes used include the Standard Hydrogen Electrode, Normal Hydrogen Electrode, Saturated Calomel Electrode, Reversible Hydrogen Electrode, Silver Chloride Electrode, Copper-Copper Sulfate Electrode, PH Electrode, Dynamic Hydrogen Electrode, and Palladium-Hydrogen Electrode.

02

Calomel Reference Electrodes

Calomel reference electrodes are widely used in various industries due to their high stability and reproducibility. They consist of a mercury-mercurous chloride electrode immersed in a potassium chloride solution. Calomel electrodes are very stable. However, they contain mercury which makes them unsuitable for use in certain applications such as food, beverage, or environmental studies. Their disposal must also be carefully controlled due to the environmental implications.

03

Non-Aqueous Reference Electrodes

Non-aqueous reference electrodes, such as those used in organic solvents, are more complex, with a variety of designs and materials. They are used in situations where aqueous or calomel reference electrodes are not suitable. The most common non-aqueous reference electrode used is the quasi-reference electrode, which is made fresh for any given experiment. This reduces the problems that come with poor storage and maintenance. They are cheaper than other types of reference electrodes.

Selection Criteria for Reference Electrodes

Compatibility with the Sample

The reference electrode must be compatible with the sample to avoid any chemical interactions that could affect the measurement. For instance, certain chemicals can degrade the body material of the electrode. it is essential to choose the correct material, such as glass, epoxy, or other specialized materials, to suit the application.

Stability

Stability is a critical factor in selecting a reference electrode. The electrode must provide a constant and defined potential to ensure accurate measurements. Most reference electrodes are combination electrodes, combining a stable reference and a working cell (half-cell) in one probe.in some applications, it may be more practical to use separate sensing and reference electrodes, especially if the different parts of the electrode are expected to have different lifespans.

Response Time

The response time of a reference electrode is another important consideration. A fast response time ensures efficiency in the analytical process. Slow or erratic response times can lead to inaccurate measurements and prolonged analysis times.

Temperature Considerations

Temperature plays a significant role in the performance of reference electrodes. the saturated calomel electrode (SCE) has a limited temperature range of up to 50°C. If the application requires use at higher temperatures, an alternative electrode must be selected. It is essential to choose an electrode that can maintain stability and accuracy across the required temperature range.

Chemical Composition of the Sample

The chemical composition of the sample is a crucial factor in selecting a reference electrode. Certain chemicals can degrade the body material of the electrode, leading to inaccurate measurements and potential damage to the electrode. It is important to choose an electrode with a body material that is resistant to the specific chemicals present in the sample. Common materials include glass, epoxy, and other specialized materials designed to withstand specific chemical environments.

Types of Junction Boxes

Anode Junction Box (AJB)

This type connects anode cables together and to the system's output cable.

Cathode Junction Box (CJB)

This box connects structure cables together and to the system's input cable.

Combined Junction Box (ACJB)

This combines the functionalities of both AJB and CJB in a single unit.

Current Control Box (CCB)

This box regulates the current output from the CP system to the protected structure.

Cathodic Bond Junction Box (CBB)

This type connects pipelines or other metallic structures to reduce galvanic corrosion.

Resistor Junction Box (RBB)

This box connects a resistor between the structure cable and ground.

FAQ

Q: Why do we need reference electrodes?

A: A reference electrode is needed to find the electrode potential of any other electrode as the potential of the reference electrode is known.

Q: What is a reference electrode in potentiometry?

A: In potentiometry, the potential between two electrodes is measured using a high impedance voltmeter, in which one of the electrodes is a reference electrode and the other one is the test electrode. The most common reference electrode used in potentiometry is the saturated calomel electrode

Q: What is an reference electrode?

A: Calomel electrode contain mercury in contact with calomel, i.e.,
A solution containing chloride ions, like a solution of , is poured over. A Calomel electrode in which a saturated solution of is used is called (saturated calomel electrode).

Q: What are secondary reference electrodes?

A: The electrode whose potential is determined by connecting to the standard hydrogen electrode is called a secondary reference electrode.

Q: What is the function of reference electrodes?

A: Reference electrode gives constant potential, which is used to calculate the potential of another half-cell.

Q: Which reference electrode is used to measure the electrode potential of other electrodes?

A: Standard Hydrogen Electrode is used to measure the electrode potential of other electrodes.
